After eighth grade graduation, Washington’s children travel to high school in nearby Nevada City. WASHINGTON HISTORYThe town of Washington was settled during the gold rush in 1849 and and large amounts of gold were taken from the area. Hard rock mines were soon established. Although many gold mining settlements grew up along this section of the Yuba River, Washington is the only that has lived on. There are still many signs of gold mining, hydraulic mining, and hard rock mining in the Washington area
